What Really Happens to Your Skin While You Sleep

Author: Ros Simmons, Co-Founder and Nutritional Therapist

We often think of skincare as what we apply.
But in reality, some of the most important work happens when we do… nothing at all

At night, your body, and your skin, shifts into a completely different mode. One designed not for protection, but for repair, renewal and restoration..

Your Skin Has a Night SHIFT

During the day, your skin is in defence mode, protecting against UV, pollution, stress and environmental damage.

But at night?

Research shows that skin processes follow a circadian rhythm, meaning many functions, including collagen activity, are timed to the body clock.

In simple terms:
Your skin is biologically programmed to repair itself overnight and collagen production is regulated by circadian rhythms.

At night:

  • Blood flow to the skin increases
  • Cell repair accelerates
  • Damage from the day begins to be undone

In fact, research shows that skin repair and regeneration peak overnight, making sleep a critical window for recovery. Well we all know the phrase 'Beauty Sleep' but its not an old wive's tale as

clinical research shows that sleep deprivation can:

  • Impair skin hydration
  • Increase water loss
  • Reduce elasticity
  • Slow barrier recovery  which helps to reduce inflammation one of the keys to healthy skin.

Natural Repair Processes

While you sleep, your skin activates natural processes, including supporting your skin’s natural renewal overnight that helps:

  • Break down dead skin cells
  • Support gentle renewal
  • Reset the skin for the next day

This is why skin often looks smoother and fresher in the morning when these processes are working well. That’s why its called Beauty Sleep

But here’s the key:

👉These systems don’t work in isolation
👉 They rely heavily on sleep quality

What Happens When You Don’t Sleep Well

Even one night of poor sleep can have visible effects.

Studies show that sleep deprivation can:

  • Reduce skin hydration
  • Increase water loss from the skin
  • Decrease elasticity
  • Worsen skin texture and fine lines

Poor sleep is also linked to:

  • Increased cortisol (stress hormone)
  • More inflammation
  • Slower skin barrier repair

Over time, this can accelerate visible ageing and dullness.

Sleep and Collagen: The Overlooked Connection

Collagen is the structural foundation of your skin, responsible for firmness, elasticity and smoothness.

But here’s what many people don’t realise:

👉 Sleep deprivation can reduce collagen production and accelerate skin ageing

This is why even the best skincare can only do so much without proper rest. Personally I’m not convinced about collagen supplements, the evidence is still very mixed, but what is true is we can help our skin produce more collagen by eating the right foods, reducing our stress (and ultimately inflammation) and sleeping well.

Choose foods such as chicken, fish, eggs for their protein content. For vitamin C (key in collagen production)  eat stawberries, kiwis, citrus fruits, red peppers (super high!), plus zinc found in pumpkin seeds, and copper in dark chocolate! Yes please.

If you did just this daily, you’d cover most bases:

  • Protein: eggs or yogurt at breakfast
  • Vitamin C: berries or kiwi
  • Lunch/Dinner: salmon or chicken + greens
  • Extras: handful of seeds or nuts

We can all do this!

Why Nighttime Skincare Matters More

At night, your skin becomes more receptive:

  • Barrier function relaxes
  • Ingredients penetrate more effectively
  • Repair pathways are active

This is why your evening routine isn’t just important, it’s essential.  Yet as a Nutritional Therapist, I always say:

Skin health is never just topical.

To truly support your skin overnight, you need both:

1. Quality Sleep

This is where Quiet Shift comes in — designed to help you fall asleep more easily and stay asleep, supporting the deep, restorative sleep your skin depends on.

2. Intelligent Night Skincare

This is where Twilight Zone works beautifully.  Formulated to support your skin’s natural overnight processes, including gentle natural exfoliation ( no scratchy exoliation......ever!), hydration and barrier support.

The TAKEAWAY

Great skin isn’t built in the mirror.
It’s built in the hours you’re asleep.

Because when you support your body properly:

  • Your skin repairs more efficiently
  • Hydration is restored
  • Texture improves
  • Radiance returns

You sleep. It refines.

FOUNDERS

At Curated Beauty, we didn’t launch on a whim or with a ready-made cheque from investors. We came to this with decades of experience, hard work, lessons learned across beauty and retail, and our own money on the line.  We started the way many women do, with determination, experience, and our own savings.

As three female founders over fifty, we’ve seen what works, what fails, and what truly matters in beauty. We know the difference between a passing fad and a product that delivers real results. We also know how easy it is to get distracted by quick wins instead of focusing on what lasts. That’s why we chose independence. By funding ourselves, we kept control, took our time, and created products we genuinely believe in.
