The most criticised chemical filters are oxybenzone, octinoxate and homosalate. The concerns fall into two separate categories that often get blurred together in headlines.
1. Environmental harm
This is the more solidly evidenced strand. Oxybenzone has been shown in lab and field studies to be toxic to coral, causing DNA damage, amongst other nasties we really should not be encouraging. Research published back in 2016 found the chemical highly toxic so much so that that Hawaii, the US Virgin Islands, Palau and others have banned oxybenzone and octinoxate in sunscreens sold locally. nih
2. Human hormone disruption.
Octinoxate and homosalate, alongside oxybenzone, show potential endocrine-disrupting activity in lab studies, but regulators are explicit that the human-health picture isn't settled. In Australia, one of the worlds most foremost skin cancer preventors countries, their regulator flagged homosalate for the same potential hormonal concerns, while noting more data is needed before firm conclusions, so this is "flagged for further study," not "proven harmful at typical use levels" nihnih.
The current UK status.
Regulations vary by country and region, and we are fortunate that the UK and Europe have some of the highest standards and protocols when it comes to ingredients and their permitted use in formulations.
1. Oxybenzone (Benzophenone-3). You will see this on the back of many chemical sunscreen products and its permitted, but UK regulations were amended so that any cosmetic product placed on the market from 21 January 2026 containing oxybenzone must comply with new, lower maximum concentration limits, with non-compliant stock allowed to remain on shelves only until 21 July 2026. The new limits cap it at up to 6% for face, hand and lip products, 2.2% in body products including sprays, and 0.5% in all other categories. MDPIScienceInsights
2. Homosalate. Still permitted, but restricted following an EU safety review. The EU's scientific safety committee concluded homosalate is safe for consumers only up to a maximum concentration of 0.5% in the final product, which is a significant cut from previous limits, and the UK has followed a similar path. 3. Octinoxate. Still permitted, though it's gone through extra scrutiny and remains one of the filters flagged for ongoing data review by regulators, alongside discussion of reef-related bans in some overseas territories.
Ultimately its still safer to use a chemical sunscreen than none at all, however mineral sunscreens are kinder to you skin and the environment.
