WHY DOES HAIR FEEL THINNER IN MIDLIFE?

Author: Co-Founder Sam Grocutt with Natasha Grocutt, Hair Growth Expert

Natasha Grocutt has been a hairdresser for 40 years and specialises in midlife hair growth, following her own hair concerns after she was diagnosed with coeliac disease.  Natasha is also our co-founder Sam's sister and has been helping her with her own hair growth journey...

Hair changes can creep up quietly. It is not always dramatic hair loss or a sudden shift overnight. More often, it is that your ponytail feels smaller, your roots sit flatter, your parting looks a little wider, or your hair simply does not feel as full as it once did. It may still be your hair, but somehow it feels different.

If that sounds familiar, you are not imagining it.

Midlife can bring changes in how hair looks, feels and behaves, and while that can be unsettling, it is also incredibly common. The good news is that there are ways to support your hair more effectively once you understand what may be going on.

Natasha Grocutt, Hair Growth Expert, says: “One of the biggest things I hear from women in midlife is not necessarily ‘my hair is falling out’, but ‘my hair just doesn’t feel like it used to’. It may feel finer, flatter, weaker or less responsive. That shift can be subtle, but it can still have a big impact on confidence.”

WHY HAIR CAN CHANGE IN MIDLIFE

There is rarely one single reason hair feels thinner in midlife. More often, it is a combination of factors.

Hormonal changes can influence hair density and how full hair appears overall. Hair may also become finer in texture, which means even if you have not lost a huge amount, it can still feel less substantial. The scalp can play a part too. A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy-looking hair, but it is often overlooked until there is a problem. Build-up, dryness, irritation or just a lack of targeted care can all affect how hair behaves.

Then there is the fact that many of us have been colouring, heat styling, brushing, tying up and generally putting our hair through quite a lot over the years. Breakage can become part of the picture, especially through the lengths, making hair feel weaker and less full.

Stress and lifestyle pressures can also contribute. Midlife often comes with a lot on the plate, and hair is not separate from that.

WHAT “THINNER” CAN REALLY MEAN

It's worth saying that thinner-feeling hair can mean different things.

For some women, it is about density. There may genuinely be less hair than there once was. For others, it is more about the strands themselves. Hair may be finer, more fragile or more prone to breakage, which means it does not give the same overall impression of volume.

Sometimes the issue is at the root, with hair sitting flatter against the scalp and lacking lift. In other cases, the scalp itself may need more support, because healthy-looking hair really does start there.

Natasha explains: “When women say their hair feels thinner, I always like to dig a little deeper into what they mean. Is it the scalp? The root area? The ends snapping? A general loss of body? Once you understand that, you can support the hair more intelligently rather than just reaching for another volumising product and hoping for the best.”

WHAT CAN ACTUALLY HELP?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but a more intentional approach can make a real difference. Here Natasha, shares her top tips...

Start with the scalp
A supported scalp matters far more than most people realise. If the scalp is being ignored, overloaded or not cared for properly, it can affect the overall feel and appearance of the hair. Our ROOT FORCE is a scalp strengthening serum formulated with Peptide technology, Caffeine and Biotin to redensify thinning, weak hair from root to tip.

Be mindful with styling
Tight styles, too much heat and rough handling can all contribute to breakage and make hair feel less resilient. Small changes in styling habits can help reduce unnecessary stress on the hair.

Use targeted treatments
Rather than relying only on styling products to create the illusion of fullness, it helps to use treatments designed to support the hair and scalp more directly.

Support the lengths too
If hair is breaking or looking tired through the mid-lengths and ends, it will never feel as full as it could. Looking after the condition of the hair overall matters just as much as focusing on the root. Our STRAND SURGE is a concentrated hair booster formulated with 50% Bond Building Matrix to strengthen, repair, and transform your hair.

Natasha adds: “Women are often told to just cut their hair shorter or use more volumiser, but that is not always the full answer. In midlife, it helps to think about both scalp health and fibre care. You want to support the environment the hair is growing from, while also keeping the existing lengths as strong and healthy-looking as possible.”

A REALISTIC APPROACH TO CHANGING HAIR

The most important thing is to be realistic. Hair usually does not transform overnight, and it is easy to become disheartened if you expect instant change.

What tends to work best is consistency. Supporting the scalp, protecting the hair from unnecessary damage, and using products that genuinely address the concerns you have will always be more helpful than chasing quick fixes.

It is also worth remembering that the goal is not to get back the exact hair you had at 25. It is to help the hair you have now feel healthier, stronger and more like you again.

The TAKEAWAY

Hair that feels thinner in midlife can be emotional. It can affect how you feel about getting ready, how you style your hair, and how confident you feel day to day.

But it is not something you have to ignore or simply put up with.

Understanding what may be behind the change is the first step. From there, a more considered routine, one that gives attention to the scalp as well as the lengths, can help hair feel more supported over time.

NEWS

At Curated Beauty London, we’ve always been clear about who we’re here for.

Launched by Natalie, Ros & Sam - three women in our midlife, building products and routines we genuinely needed ourselves. Skin changing. Hair behaving differently. Energy fluctuating. Confidence evolving. Menopause wasn’t something we planned to “address”, it was already part of the conversation from day one.

That’s why joining the GenM Collective feels like such a meaningful moment for us.

WELLNESS

INNER POWER started with a conversation between us - three women in our 50s, immersed in the world of beauty, wellness and nutrition, all noticing the same thing.

We didn’t feel unwell. We didn’t feel burnt out. But we did feel different.  Energy dipped more easily. Recovery took longer. Strength felt harder to maintain and whilst we all exercise, we were noticing a lack of muscle tone and strength, too.

We kept seeing creatine discussed in the context of male athletes and gym performance. But when Natalie shared how long she’d quietly been using creatine as part of her own routine and Ros began researching it beyond sport - something clicked.
